DIY Cherry Desk: Overcoming Challenges in Woodworking

From the long slab of cherry we decided where best to chop the length to create the one large and one small desks. We carefully placed the slab on the garage floor and proceeded to cut using a circular saw. Incredibly, we reached halfway and the saw became stuck and wouldn’t even turn the blade. No problem we thought, we’ll simply pull it out and start at the other side and tidy up the edges later. Nope. The saw was stuck so fast we couldn’t get it out. At all! We wedged, we lifted one side, we twisted. In fact, we got to a point where we were prepared to ruin the thoughts of a desk as we just couldn’t extract it.

Somehow, after nearly an hour of head scratching and forcing, we managed to yank the saw free without damaging any of the wood. I guess the plank was under so much strain to twist and warp that when we cut, it relaxed onto the blade and that was that!

I mounted the smaller desk onto the legs I’d purchased from Etsy (again) and proceeded to sand to a finish. I then applied the by now obligatory Osmo wood preserver and several coats of top oil. Whilst the desk is thinner than we first envisaged, I now had a gorgeous looking desk, perfect to house my set-up for years to come.
