Creating a Stunning Table from Leftover Oak

Even though the remaining piece of Oak from the large worktop was not big enough for the sides of the cabinets there was no way it was going to waste! It was an impressive hunk of wood and a floor always needs a table right?

The piece was fairly square so I straightened it up and set to work sanding it’s rough sawn surface back to a smooth finish. As usual I started with the belt sander at 60 grit and then progressed to 80 before using the orbital for 120 and then finally 180. Sanding is a laborious job but ultimately satisfying and I quite enjoy ‘revealing’ the grain and character of this most natural of materials.

I also love applying wood protector and then top oil for the same reason (Osmo). The finish results in a natural colouring but one that begs to be touched and stroked! Its so tactile, or is that just me?

I purchased some very simple but classy looking raw steel legs from Etsy and attached them easily to the bottom with some strong wood screws. Voila, a lovely piece of simple but effective furniture that’ll last longer than I will.

Cost:– Oak (off-cut so already inc. in worktop price) £0, Sandpaper £5, Oils £3, Legs £45, Total = £53
