Whilst not strictly about wood, this post helps to set the background scene regarding the wood creations we were going to add and build on from. It also demonstrates the complete re-build required to make our room the office we knew we wanted.
The first task was to deconstruct the desk and shelf unit completely. This is always both a fun part (who doesn’t love a bit of demolition?) but also a point of no return. Once you’ve ripped out the old, you’re committed to replacing it with something. In this case, I was a bit nervous whether we’d be able to do our ideas justice and not leave us wishing we’d have bought factory made units.

Ripping out the old and painting the ceiling and walls in our chosen paint didn’t take too long already we were excited. It’s amazing what a lick of fresh paint can do to a room and we immediately knew this was going to be an improvement.
A small point but one worth bearing in mind are the aesthetics of electric sockets and light switches. I maintain that moving away from the standard white plastic ones is money well spent and helps to complete a room.

The only other decision we made was to black spray paint the ceiling lights to match the other electrical outlets but only on the lights that’d be inserted into the new oak slat cladding. We also took the decision to paint what would be the background to the the oak slats, black so that the gaps would visually disappear.
We were now good to go with the hard but fun task of building and making furniture.
