Like many other households, our discarded shoes scattered and multiplied around our front door like we were permanently hosting a teenagers birthday party. Despite many efforts to limit the eyesore, we really didn’t have a good alternative option. Until I came up with a cunning plan!
I did my usual research, searching for ideas and designs I liked in online stores and images of ‘wooden shoe racks’. After narrowing them down, I settled on one that I thought had both a contemporary look but that also had enough storage to fit a fair few pairs. Bless those lucky households that only needed to store 4 pairs, alas, we were not one of them!
The plan was simple enough, or so I thought and the cut list was even simpler. It took a few minutes for me to work out how each shelf was supported and the unit put together.
I had some Osmo black stain left over from the bed project so I used that to blacken the unit’s stand/supports. I found it tricky to work out the order of how to construct the unit so that I could hide the screws underneath the shelves and still get at them to tighten them up (harder than it sounds!).

This was a little DIY woodwork project done pretty much on the spur of the moment from two left over oak boards I had lying in the workshop. It turns out to be one of my favourite pieces of functional furniture I’ve made. It looks stylish, cost nothing and works to keep our front door (relatively) free of stray shoes!
Cost:- As all oak wood and stain was left over in workshop – £0
