We’d finished our bedroom makeover and weirdly, the only thing we weren’t happy with was our laundry basket. The one we had certainly didn’t fit into the vibe we’d created and it had no place in the bathroom.
There was only one thing to do. Make one. I decided all I needed was to make a box with a lid. The usual issue was what wood should I choose. After a few weeks of researching and thinking, we decided on the pine I’d used for the guest bedroom bed. Providing of course Winkleigh Timber still had some in stock.
I worked out my cut list and took the enjoyable drive over to their yard. I was delighted to be told by Jodie that yes, they had some but it’d take a few weeks before it was ready. No problem.

When it arrived I wasted little time in getting to work. The roughness of the pine boards was perfect for the look we were after. The only issue working with it was to watch out for splinters!
The first task was to cut each board to length. Having done that I simply attached them to an internal support on each end of the boards. This would serve as a brace to screw the sides together at the end.
I used the same principle for the top and bottom but put the braces further away from the ends on the top. This meant it would have more chance of closing properly!

I chose black screws and took care to ensure they were evenly spaced out so they didn’t draw attention to themselves and although it wasn’t perfect, it looked really good. I’d purchased a black handle from Etsy for the top and re-used the brass chains from the old laundry basket to act as a stay for the lid.

The only other thing to consider was how to stop our clothes from snagging on the wood on the inside. My wife bought some heavy canvas like material and made an internal lining. She sewed some velcro to the top and we stuck that to the inside of the wood. Perfect. A stylish piece of functional furniture that looks good and does it’s job perfectly.
Cost:- Pine £86, Handle £6, Total £92
