Overcoming My Fear of DIY Projects

Of course, my confidence of working with wood was growing day by day. Not only working with wood but all small DIY jobs that needed to be tackled. Fixing odd things, hanging pictures etc became things I did rather than shy away from. This may sound normal to most people but for me, for most of my life, I’d hated doing these jobs for fear of causing more problems than I solved. I am by no means good at DIY now, I just find I’m not frightened of it. Instead of finding reasons not to do jobs, I discovered a ‘can do’ attitude.

One such job needing to be done was adjusting the size of our corner desk. We’d had this custom made in our old house where it looked great. However, the only place it’d work in our new home was in our living room. The only problem was it was too large and overhung a large picture window. I measured how much I’d need to reduce its length by and marked it up.

I nervously made the first circular saw cut having removed the legs. The side was bolted on so I removed that too and preserved it to replace it on the new length. The legs were slightly recessed but as I had a new router, I set that to the correct depth and cut to the size of the leg plate. The process was quite straightforward and after waxing the freshly sawn ends so they’d blend in with the rest of the desk, nobody would ever know I chopped about 40cm off one end!
