It was time to really test myself and see whether I could make a real item of furniture. We needed some indoor steps to reach the top shelf of our kitchen cupboards. As usual, I looked online and couldn’t find anything I liked. I then looked at ideas for DIY steps and couldn’t find any inspiration until I saw these. They were funky, different and I thought, would match the contemporary element of our home.

The real bonus was that the creator had placed a step by step guide, with design plans, of his Uni project! I had no excuse, for the price of a sheet of plywood (that I already had), I could play around and see what happened.
It’s a clever design and looks pretty striking. The question was, could I do it any justice? I spent a few hours measuring and re-measuring and then cutting out the various pieces. I’ll admit to trashing a bit of wood here as I learned angles and clean cuts. I’ll also admit to frustration. There’s nothing more infuriating than things that should fit, that somehow just don’t! I walked away to calm down a few times but in the end, I got there. I undercoated it and then painted it with two coats of dulux paint.

Is it perfect? Nowhere near. Does it work? Yes. Does it wobble? Slightly. Am I happy with it? Almost. I’m so glad I attempted this (for me) ambitious project. It sits in our kitchen and still looks stylish (in my opinion) and is used as and when we need to use it.
Cost:- Ply sheet £35, Paint £40, Total £75
