Creating a Cozy Nesting Spot for Blue Tits

We have a tree that sits in the hedge directly in view of our bedroom and I thought it’d be lovely to put a bird box in it so we could hopefully watch them each Spring.

I looked up a plan (by a bird trust) online with measurements, angles and all important hole size. The garden attracts a lot of tits so I made the hole the correct size for Blue Tits. Using a section of Oak board left over from the lights I’d made for the hall, I cut it to size. Screwing the sides together was easy and although I took a bit of care, I reasoned the birds wouldn’t be too troubled by the aesthetics. I left the wood untreated for obvious reasons, being Oak, it should last a few years yet.

It turned out pretty cool I think and by far the hardest part of the job was fixing it up into the tree itself. After a few swear words and even more scratches it now sits proudly but quietly in the oak tree. It took two springs for the birds to pluck up the courage to nest in it but now they happily use it as intended. It makes me smile every morning to see the Blue Tits hopping in and out of the home I created for them.
